The North Dakota Department of Health reports that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer (about 525 new
cases per year) and the second leading cancer-related cause of death among
North Dakota women. North Dakota's colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates are comparable to national rates with approximately 432 new cases of colorectal
cancer diagnosed each year in North Dakota. Influenza or pneumonia was the underlying or a contributing factor in the death of 401 North Dakotans for the 2009-2010 influenza season.
NDHCRI is coordinating efforts with North Dakota's Regional Extension Center (REC) to offer technical assistance to practices that have implemented an EHR but have not yet attained meaningful use. Practices will be guided on how to maximize the use of their electronic health records to support care coordination and increase rates of screening mammograms, colorectal screenings, and influenza and pneumococcal immunizations. Outcomes for the physician practice are to increase the number of patients for whom they have complete preventive care data, identify patients who need preventive care, and measure and improve preventive care performance.
NDHCRI is convening a statewide Prevention Learning and Action Network (LAN) to address common challenges, provide for peer-to-peer mentoring, and share best practices.
