Pneumonia and influenza are the fifth leading causes of death in the United States in adults age 65 and older. Despite the fact that influenza and pneumococcal vaccines are clinically effective, cost-effective, and are covered by Medicare Part B benefits, they remain underutilized. Healthy People 2010 target rates are 90 percent for influenza and penumococcal vaccination for adults aged 65 and older. Under the Adult Immunization Project, North Dakota Health Care Review, Inc., is committed to providing educational materials and office tools to increase the administration of influenza and pneumococcal immunizations for Medicare beneficiaries.
