Infections
that happen
in conjunction with surgical operations are a major cause of patient
injury,
mortality, and health care cost. The
Surgical Care
Improvement Project (SCIP) Collaborative is designed to improve the
quality of
surgical care in a cost-effective manner. Redesigning systems of care
with
safety in mind can prevent surgical infections. NDHCRI is working with
hospitals and practitioners to redesign their systems of care by
testing and
implementing change in key areas with emphasis on improving the
selection and
timing of prophylactic antibiotics to reduce infection rates and
preventing
other surgical complications including cardiac, respiratory, and venous
thromboembolic events. These complications
take a
significant toll on surgical patients and raise the overall cost of
health care
by increasing length of stay, admissions to ICU, and hospital costs.
